What is a Hot Club?
The Hot Club sound originated with
guitarist Django Reinhardt and
violinist Stephane Grappelli.
Together they formed the Quintet
of the Hot Club of France in 1934.
Django married the sounds of
American jazz, French musette and
traditional gypsy music to create
jazz manouche, or gypsy swing.
The original quintet was comprised
of violin, solo guitar, two rhythm
guitars, and bass.
In gypsy swing the rhythm guitar serves the
function of both piano and drums. The
violinist and lead guitar provide the melodic
information and exchange solos. Clarinet
or accordian may replace the violin, or
augment it in larger ensembles. After WWII
Django often played with piano and drums.
The Hot Club of Boulder is currently a
quartet with two guitars, clarinet, and bass.
We play and sing standards from the 30's
and 40's, a number of Django Reinhardt
compositions, and some modern jazz
manouche.
